## Fall Festival -- This Saturday!

**Oct 10, 10am**

A completely free family celebration! Come join us for our **Creekside Fall Festival** on Saturday, October 10, from 10am–12pm. Enjoy games, popcorn, crafts, face painting, a cake walk, fun activities, and a photo op! This event is fun for the little ones and the older elementary kids!

Bring the whole family and invite your friends! **No registration is necessary to attend.**
**Family-Friendly Costumes Welcome!** Want to dress up? Come in a family-friendly costume and join the fun! Please avoid scary, frightening, or dark themes. We want our Fall Festival to be a fun and welcoming place for every family, reflecting the light and love of Jesus. Costumes are not required.

Want to help make the Fall Festival happen? We need a few more adults to help us run different games already planned and prepped! We also need help with set up on Thursday!

# **Shhhh... Christmas is being Planned**

I won't tell you all of the plans, don't worry. I have to get through the Fall Festival first. However, I am so excited for Christmas! We will have multiple events and resources so every family can participate in ways that bless their families.

Every year, Creekside Kids provides one new resource and copies of resources from previous years. Over the years, Kids has provided coloring pages, devotionals, crafts, and calendars of family activities. As I am planning this year's Christmas -- is there a Christmas resource that you would love to put hands on so that you can lead your family with eyes on Jesus this season? Let me know and maybe I can make it happen!

# Lesson Recap

Sunday - We discussed the walls of Jericho! The conquering of Jericho was the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham to bring his family back to his land. God keeps His promises!

Wednesday - We talked about humans are made in the image of God, but we have chosen to sin. We talked about how God loves us - even when we sin - but that doesn't mean we should keep sinning on purpose.

# Disciple Making Moment

October gives us a unique opportunity to practice something that matters far beyond Halloween: learning to disagree well. Families may come to different conclusions about Halloween. Rather than focusing on telling you what your family should do, I want to focus on how we can help our kids—and ourselves—respond with grace and navigate through this season.

**1. Know your convictions and boundaries regarding this holiday.**

We live in a dark world, and everywhere we turn, dark and scary things are present—even right next to the candy and cute costumes. Our children are receiving messages from the world around them, but those messages don't have to be the only ones they hear.

You can choose to send a different message to your children about this holiday. That's okay! Know where your family's boundaries are and why you have them. Then, confidently live within those boundaries.

**2. When appropriate, share the reasoning behind your boundaries with your kids.**

Kids are capable of understanding more nuance than we sometimes give them credit for. If your family chooses not to participate in Halloween or Fall Festivals, tell your kids, when age appropriate, why you have those boundaries. If your family participates in Fall Festivals, Trunk or Treats, or other Halloween activities, talk with your kids about why you have made those choices, too.

Whatever you choose, talk about it. You are helping your children learn how to think biblically and apply God's Word to the decisions they make.

**3. Be a positive example of how to disagree with others.**

Our kids are watching how we talk about people who make different choices than we do.

Instead of saying, *"Our family knows better than that family because they trick-or-treat,"* we can say, *"Our family has decided not to trick-or-treat. Other Christian families have made a different choice, and we can disagree about this while still loving and respecting one another."*

Or instead of saying, *"That family shouldn't let their kids do that,"* we can say, *"That's not something our family chooses to do. We can be confident in our own convictions without assuming that everyone who makes a different choice is ignoring God."*

Our kids need to see that disagreement doesn't have to lead to judgment, division, or unkindness. We can hold our convictions firmly while treating people who disagree with us graciously.

**4. A Resource for the holiday**

Creekside Kids is not asking families to participate in Halloween. We recognize that families may come to different convictions about it and we want to support parents as they disciple their children according to those convictions.

For families who do choose to trick-or-treat, small coloring pages will be available at the Fall Festival to take home and share with your neighbors. You are welcome to take some and pair them with crayons, candy, or simply hand them out on their own.

If your family participates in trick-or-treating, you can use that opportunity to be generous, start a conversation, and share the good news of Jesus with your neighbors. One family, last year, had a prayer bucket on their porch. Kids left their prayer requests and the family prayed over their neighbors very specifically.

Families who abstain from trick-or-treating are welcome to take the coloring pages and use them in whatever way fits their family's convictions, too. The coloring page focuses on the love of Jesus and provides a simple way to share that message with others.
